DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY LABOUR SET FOR ELECTION BATTLE

Dumfries & Galloway Labour Party have completed their internal candidate selection process for the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections on 5 May.

Fiona O'Donnell was selected last week by local party members and affiliate organisations to stand in the Galloway and West Dumfries Constituency, joining Elaine Murray MSP who was re-selected to fight her Dumfriesshire Constituency last year.

Ms O'Donnell has worked in mental health services, social care and for a children's charity. She was also the MP for East Lothian from 2010-15.

Speaking after last week's selection meeting Ms O'Donnell said:

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to stand in Galloway and West Dumfries. I am looking forward to the campaign and holding both the SNP and Tories to account for their record in government. Both have severely neglected this region, and local communities deserve to see a new direction being taken which matches the priorities of this part of Scotland. We need urgent action on jobs and skills to give our young people opportunities and investment in infrastructure to encourage and support new business start-ups. That is how we will breathe new life into our high streets and protect our public services.

“I will be speaking to as many voters as possible between now and 5 May to build support for Scottish Labour and set out our vision for Scotland. I have the experience, inside and outside politics to be a strong voice for local communities. It's time for a fresh voice to speak up for those communities and put them first.”

Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray said:

“I warmly congratulate Fiona on her selection to fight the Galloway and West Dumfries constituency and I look forward to campaigning alongside her to take our positive message to the people of Dumfries & Galloway. This election is vital, particularly for our region, as it’s the opportunity for local people to hold both the failing Scottish and UK governments to account – to say the status quo is no longer good enough.”

Dumfries & Galloway Council Leader Ronnie Nicholson added:

“With Fiona now joining Elaine in leading Scottish Labour’s campaign in Dumfries & Galloway, our local party is ready to deliver our alternative vision to communities across the region. Both Elaine and Fiona are passionate about making our country a fairer place, and are strong voices to oppose UK and Scottish Government cuts and neglect in our region. They will have my full support in the months ahead as we drive for real change across Dumfries & Galloway.”
