Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray and Leader of Dumfries & Galloway Council Ronnie Nicholson, have called for Trade Unionists and working people in Dumfries & Galloway to join the campaign against the Tory attacks on Trade Unions.
The Government’s Trade Union Bill represents the worst attack on Trade Union rights in thirty years, and has sparked outrage amongst the Trade Union movement across the country.
In response, Elaine Murray MSP and Dumfries & Galloway Regional Labour Party launched a petition opposing the Bill, collecting signatures from hundreds of people on Dumfries High Street on Saturday 26th September.
In addition, Dumfries & Galloway Council Labour Group pushed through a motion opposing the UK Governments draconian Trade Union Bill at the Full Council Meeting on Tuesday 29th September, despite opposition from the Dumfries & Galloway Conservative and Unionists Group and the Independent Tory Group.
Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray said:
“I invite all those who believe in a strong Labour movement and the right of workers to organise, to join our campaign to protect workers’ rights and oppose the Government’s anti-Trade Union Bill. Over the last few years, workers in Dumfries & Galloway and across the country have seen their wages stagnate and the cost of living rise. Those workers need strong Trade Unions standing up for them – that’s why this Government must be stopped. Our petition has already drawn support from hundreds of local people in our region, and is still available to sign in our office in Dumfries.”
Leader of Dumfries & Galloway Council, Cllr Ronnie Nicholson added:
“If pushed through by the UK Government, this Bill would be extremely damaging for employer – employee relationships, and is a direct attack on the fundamental rights and freedoms of workers to organise. Unlike Tory Councillors in this region, who were quick to defend their party’s relentless attack on trade unions and vote against our motion, we stand shoulder to shoulder with working people across Dumfries & Galloway. It is our duty to do everything we can to prevent this draconian Bill being pushed through by this Government.”
