LOCAL MP TO HOLD TALKS OVER BANK CLOSURES

LOCAL MP TO HOLD TALKS OVER BANK CLOSURES

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown is to hold talks with representatives of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) to raise local concerns over their plans to close  five branches across Dumfries and Galloway.

The meeting will also involve representatives of the Post Office, after the bank indicated that they have reached agreement with the “the local Post Office which is close to the branch so that customers can withdraw cash, check balances and pay bills”. The MP will also view the proposed “new Mobile Van Branch” the bank says will cover communities affected by any closures, and other communities that currently don’t have a branch.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said, “Understandably communities affected by these closures are really angry at the decisions which they view as a real snub to customers and staff in the local branches. I will be meeting with representatives of the Royal Bank to raise the concerns of those communities. Overturning the decisions is obviously a tall order as this is clearly part of a UK wide set of closures but we have to make the case. Some of these closures completely contradict pledges given by the bank in the past that they would not close a branch where it was the last bank in a town.”

“RBS claim people will be able to carry out basic banking at a local Post Office, so when I meet bank representatives I have also asked for representative of the Post Office to come to the meeting to discuss just exactly what services will be available for the communities affected.”

“I will also be viewing the proposed mobile van branch and discussing what communities it will cover and when.”
