LOCAL MSP AND MP PRAISE LOCAL HEALTH BOARD FOR SETTING THE EXAMPLE
Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray and Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown have praised NHS Dumfries and Galloway for setting a national example by banning mesh implants.
This comes after it was announced that Scottish Health Secretary Alex Neil MSP has now written to all Scottish Health Boards requesting the suspension in the use of mesh implants pending a safety investigation. NHS Dumfries and Galloway had already announced that it had ordered the suspension of the use of the implants.
Commenting on the announcement, Elaine Murray said:
“Where NHS Dumfries and Galloway has led, the Scottish Government has now followed. The local health board realised that there was a serious issue and took action.”
“Unfortunately the Scottish Government maintained for some time that it could do nothing, and has at last changed it stance. If it had acted more decisively, maybe a lot more local women could have been spared the pain of these implants.”
Russell Brown added:
“This underlines the fact that the local health board did the right thing in suspending the use of these mesh transplants. This safety investigation must now get to the bottom of what affects these implants are having on patients and what action should be taken going forward.”
